Professional Teeth Whitening vs. At-Home Options

The main differences are supervision, fit, and knowing what is causing the discoloration.

Not all discoloration is the same

Surface staining from coffee, tea, or red wine behaves differently from discoloration that comes from within the tooth, from an old restoration, or from trauma. Whitening addresses some of these and not others, which is why an examination should precede any whitening plan.

What supervision changes

A dentist-supervised approach starts with a check for decay, gum inflammation, and existing restorations. Custom trays, where used, keep material where it is intended to be. Sensitivity can be anticipated and managed rather than discovered mid-course.

Where over-the-counter products fit

Retail products are convenient and can help with mild surface staining. Their limits are generic fit and no assessment of what is causing the color change. If results are uneven or sensitivity appears, that is a reason to stop and ask.

Restorations do not whiten

Crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings keep their original shade. If visible restorations are part of your smile, the sequence of whitening and any restorative work needs to be planned deliberately.
