Maintaining Oral Health Between Dental Visits
Most of your oral health outcome is decided at home, in short daily increments.
Technique beats duration
Brushing hard and fast does less than brushing gently and thoroughly. Angling the bristles toward the gumline and working in small sections covers the areas most people miss — the inner surfaces and the back molars.
Cleaning between teeth
A toothbrush cannot reach the surfaces where teeth touch. Floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers each work; the best one is the one you will genuinely use every day.
Frequency of exposure matters
Repeated snacking and sipping sweetened drinks through the day keep the mouth in an acidic state far longer than a single serving at mealtime. In a warm climate, frequent sports drinks and sweetened iced coffee are worth a second look.
When to call instead of waiting
Persistent sensitivity, bleeding gums that do not settle, a chipped tooth, a lost restoration, or a sore that does not heal are all reasons to contact the practice rather than wait for the next scheduled visit.
